Re: cheapest places in the world to go on holiday
I took a week off a couple of years back and just did the touristy stuff within about an hour of where I live - stuff I hadn't got round to since we moved there 15 years ago. Ashby Castle (on the No.7 which we had never used), Foxton Locks, National Space Centre, Great Central (steam) Railway and a few other places. So the only real expenses were the attractions, no accommodation or food over what it would normally cost.

We were lucky with the weather, but it was a great week.

jfk makes a very good point. You could do worse things than just take a flight to somewhere like Valencia or Seville/Barcelona and if you go to the non tourist areas I guarantee you will be eating and drinking well for very little.

Back garden and put a mattress in your loft.

A change is as good as a rest

Middlesborough was cheap.

(I didn't intend staying there, but the B&Bs and inns on my cycle trip through the North Yorkshire moors were scarcer than expected...)

Got to be Cwmbran in South Wales, one of the few places I'd pay through the nose NOT to visit.

Slightly lame excuse to link to the Fresh Prince of Cwmbran video too...

Ecuador is cheaper than Colombia.

I'd imagine that Bolivia is cheaper still.

Re: cheapest places in the world to go on holiday
If the question was 'what's the cheapest place once you get there' probably the South American destinations like Colombia or Ecuador would win out.
Take Colombia. You probably won't find a R/T from London to Bogota for much less than GBP 650 but once you are here it's stunningly cheap. For example for One Pound - Pint of Beer in a bar: Two Pounds choice of cocktail at a club, lunch, half hour taxi ride in town: Five Pounds choice of Taxi from the airport, dinner: Ten Pounds night in a decent hostel (likely with bar) Fifty Pounds: Night at a decent hotel, adventure tour (something like Paragliding, mountain biking) Five Hundred Pounds: Apartment for a month. With wages down here starting at around GBP 120 a month for some reason foreign visiting men seem very popular with the local female population!
